20. Jahrhundert: 1914-1945 | Nationalsozialismus
Art and Culture
Idealised, pure and Aryan. In art, the Nazis propagate a new image of man. Everything that does not correspond to it is considered "degenerate" and "un-German". Many painters, authors, composers and actors are now banned from their professions. Some of them leave Germany, others go into an inner emigration – like the graphic artist and sculptress Käthe Kollwitz. Her pacifist attitude and her works critical of war and destruction meet with criticism from the Nazi rulers. Despite restrictions, she continues to work and watches in horror as the next generation goes to war.
