Repercussions of the Stab-in-the-Back Legend from 1933 to 1945
"Today the German knows without a doubt that he has been defeated." In 1945, an American propaganda film sums up the attitude of the Allies in World War II, making it clear that there is no second stab-in-the-back myth to arise. This time the Germans are to accept that they have indeed suffered a military defeat. Hitler had repeatedly used the myth to stifle thoughts of resistance to the Nazi regime. And indeed, many found it difficult to stab the Führer in the back – such as the conspirators of July 20th, 1944. It was a fatal aftermath of the stab-in-the-back legend that had already weighed so heavily on the Weimar Republic.
